The party was Saturday, July 3rd from 3-5PM. Typically this is a VERY hot time of year so we had sprinklers and pools set up outside... but thankfully the weather was forgiving and in the 80's!
I made up some fun invites with googly-eyes, scrapbook paper, and brads the allow its wings to open/close.
We had red balloons (one for each kid to take home... those that remained were "released" in the air after the party), red streamers and gift bags for each kid (complete with black spots, of course!). We served hot dogs, chips and pasta salad (and beer & sangria to the parent chaperone's!)
...And for the cake: ladybug cupcakes! Chocolate cake with red/black frosting. I bought black M&M's for spots and we used a strip of black shoelace licorice to "divide" the winds.

Yeah, its not nearly as robust as your mom's friend who did a bug-themed bday party,... but 3 yr olds don't appreciate that level of detail... maybe when she's 5, LOL! Wish you and Jack could've attended...
