Cheesy Grin
Evie's really into flashing her, as my dad used to call it—"sh*t eating grin", these days. I haven't a clue why one would be grinning like this with a mouthful of sh*t, but Evie certainly likes to make this face with cheekfuls with cheerios or fish sticks.
Is cheekfuls a word?

9 month portraits
We got our photos back from Penneys! We decided to order only 2 of the 10 poses this time after my 1. having over 50 pictures shoved away in an envelope from last time and 2. my having spent over $150 last time. We kept her 9 month pics at a low cost of $17. Not too shabby...
We picked their new "Woodland meadow" background to keep the photo nice 'n cheesy like we had when we were kids. ;-)
Enjoy!

L'il Camper
Evie looks like a future camp counselor in this outfit. Or maybe a future hippie. Hmmmm....
I can't believe she sat on this step next to me after our afternoon walk today. She's never done that before (I've never tried before, either). She's getting better at sitting on my lap so I thought I'd plop her down and see what happened. She did fine for about 10 minutes until starting to tumble forward while reaching for a helicopter seedling (as a snack).

Sit 'n Spin
Evie still doesn't actually crawl yet. She will pull herself along (well, its actually more UP your shirtsleeve) or pull things toward herself (like her toy baskets under the coffee table). But, she leans forward and gets her leg stuck under herself.... that pesky leg! Drat! She then typically retreats and gives up Or, even better, cry until you help her out. Fun, fun!
But, todays sit and spin gives me "hope" that mobility is on the horizon (or maybe that's "fear"?)

Corny
Evie's first "real" food beyond Zweiback toast or cereal "Puffs" was bread & pasta. Then we moved to corn. (We're in to starches, apparently). The following was originally filmed last week. I particularly love the corn nearly sucked up her nostril. Maybe just I find this funny. Well, Evie must too, cause she laughs along with me.

Baby's First Ear Infection
Evie's been "snotty" for at least a week but nothing too out-of-control.
But, starting Friday night, she had a little less-than restful sleep.
Saturday night was filled with continuous "wah-wah's" that would stop the moment we'd check on her (only to find her amidst a very large pool of drool).
Sunday night was coughs interjected with cries. After picking her up out of bed, listless, around 9:30PM, I told Rob we should call the doctor in the morning.
Monday morning I phoned in and they said to bring her in. I felt a little over-reacionary (I mean, its just a cold... its not like she is running a fever or acting funny during the day. Although, she hasn't really been eating the last 2 days...).
A co-worker recently told me about his friend who's 11-month-old died of pneumonia this year (why do people tell you these things?!.). Apparently mom & dad brought the kid in to the doctor, it was a slow moving sickness that acted like a common cold. The baby was dead within 3 days when its organs shut-down. Nothing they could do. You'd have to put me on suicide watch if that ever happened to me. Suicide watch for at least a full year.
Back to my story, Evie has an ear infection. The husband tells me she (doctor) looked in the one ear and he stopped listening after that (he assumed if you have one infection than that means a double ear infection so who knows what Evie really has). The doctor did say this, she's handling it better than most kids would so, at least our babe's a trooper...

The great Thirteen-Acres Spring Yard Sale
This thing is rather huge. Its held on the school grounds of both Holton Elementary and Thirteen-Acres Elementary (they butt up against each other, its an odd set-up). The proceeds go to benefit Thirteen-Acres Elementary but it is so huge that it spills over. If you haven't visited us yet, you'll know that we live 3 houses away from all of this so its an easy event to attend!
Last year I trolled for hours but this year (with kid in tow) it was more like an hour.
I don't think it was nearly as grand this year - lots of space to move around (funny complaint, I'm well aware).
But, I did manage to find a few "needs". I bought 2 books in good shape (many were dog-eared or over priced) for $2. I bought an odd assortment of wood blocks for 50¢. A pair of never-used pink size 9 girls boots (I'm thinking winter in Ohio in 2009?) for $3. An old V-Tech push along with computerized talkie buttons for $5 (the sounds it makes are awful. I might take my new batteries back out! Evie will never care). And finally, the pinnacle, a ginormous plastic playschool dollhouse for $15. The dollhouse really needs a scrubbing and I might spend time affixing new "wallpaper" on its walls someday... but I thought it was worth a shot.
So, all-in-all... $25.50.
Not bad for some shit that can all become new baby favorites or someday sold on craigslist to a kid who will use them, again.
Dining with Friends
The family - exploring the backyard.
Exploring the backyard.
Dad and Duncan.
Cookie! A word Duncan eagerly exclaims.
I swear my New Year's Resolution should have been to get together with long-lost friends regardless of the current condition of my house... cause frankly, I'd be succeeding at a resolution for once!
We do not see D & C nearly enough especially since they have Duncan who is only 7 months older than Evie. Although this is quite a gap now, it won't be come kindergarten time.
Plus, Duncan's owners are fairly enjoyable company, too.
We got together early so as not to interfere with the kid's 7PM bedtimes. Its funny to think we are sitting at home now just watching TV and they are probably doing the same. *sigh* So much for "late" get-togethers when babies are in the picture.
Enjoy!

Dining Al Fresco
Ah, the great outdoors.
Details.
Wrong end, Evie-Pie.
We finally purchased an outdoor dining set and are LOVING IT. I say this like we've just been lazy and putting this purchase off, but actually... this has been a long road to get here. Rob put in the brick patio last spring before baby made her grand entrance. After that, we hadn't the budget nor the interest in eating outdoors (summer in the south is not best spent outdoors).
So, we ordered our set online after minor researching and trying out samples at big box retailers.
After 3 week wait, It then finally arrived and we've been dining outside at dinnertime.
We pulled a fold-up/travel high chair out of the basement (another hand-me-down) and put it up on the table for Evie to feed herself while we eat. Or, while we drink beer. The beer in the photo is mine, not Evie's... but don't let her fool you! This sly beast while swoop up your beer the moment you stop looking so, watch out! Kid loves cheap beer in a bottle (*sniff* just like her pappy).
Ok, the post is getting wierd.
Enjoy!

Miles' Birthday - The big ONE
The party was on Sunday, April 13th but I am posting this on Miles' real birthday - the 14th. I'm also actually writing this much later than that but wanted things to appear on the blog in date order. ;-)
So, we partied for a few hours and enjoyed an array of homemade quiches, fruit salad, large croissants, waffles and homemade carrot cake cupcakes (complete with homemade frosting). And, most importantly, mimosas.
Damnit, T, now I have to top you.
Here are some pics. We had a good time. It was fun watching Evie and Miles paw at each others' faces until Evie began to whine about it. Miles' kept trying to touch her teeth (I think) and she kept trying to eat his finger. Then Evie would grab hair. Social interaction is an amazing skill we all learn.
Enjoy!

Delish! This didn't take too much coaxing.

Today
Today you took an hour & 45 minute morning nap and then took an hour & 1/2 afternoon nap. You've also been rather snuggly. You spent time on the floor with Miles (more on Miles' first birthday celebration later when I've had a chance to DL pics) but would then reach back for me to hold you. You even cried, and then toppled over, when I briefly left the room.
I don't know if you are on the verge of getting sick or if you just had a very loving day.
It was really awesome when we laid belly-to-belly on the couch before bedtime. You poked at my teeth and then handed me your spare pacifier. I would bite it and you giggled from behind the paci in your mouth. You'd yank your spare from my teeth's grip and then put it back to my face. I played for the bait again and again while you'd giggle each time. It was pretty fantastic. I like it when we just look at each other that closely. I could really feel our connection again... which is really one of the best feelings in the world.

9 Month Check-Up: Stats
weight: 21lbs 2 oz (75%)
height: 29.25 in (95%)
head circumference: 47.5 cm (97%)
Evie was given clearance to start eating finger foods (except really crunchy things like apples or raw carrots). We are also to start weaning her off a bottle and onto a sipper cup (good luck!). And, we can use bug spray & sunblock this summer (see ya in July!).
Wow - I'm growing more anxious about the road ahead. Finally I can do all these new and exciting things... and YIKES! She is growing increasingly curious, precocious and mobile. All new dangers ahead!

This past week in review
In a better effort to keep up with the ever-changing times...
I've noticed that Evie's started "assisting" me in removing her shirts/onesies. When I plopped her down on the bathroom floor about 5 days ago (which, I have got to say is the best thing these days. She sits without worry of flopping over OR getting into anything. Yes, I know these days are VERY short lived), Evie helped pull her shirt over her head after her arms were out. Yet another sign that she is growing increasingly more intelligent than the dog.
Evie now eagerly eats her Puffs (something we introduced approx 2 weeks ago). She recognizes the canister now and will light up as I pour a few in front of her. She then scatters her hands across the puffs crushing them in her sticky fingers. What doesn't end up as powder or on the floor is then gobbled up. Evie can now cram a few in her mouth at one time.
Zweiback. Last night after Evie ate her dinner at lighting speed, I called out to Rob, "No more dinner?" No response. He had prepared the plate for me and I was far to lazy to spin in my chair to open the fridge & see if there were leftovers. Instead, I decided to open up the doors to a whole new adventure by finally introducing the box of Zweiback toast I had bought weeks ago. She. Loved. It.
And, you know what? Its not that bad, kinda cinnamon-ie.
Evie goes in for her 9 month check-up tomorrow. I plan to pay tribute to Ivy.
Evie goes in for her 9 month JC Penney's portraits on Saturday.

9 Months Old
Well, Evie, I said I would jot things down as they happened and I did anything but. This month started slow but zipped by in the end. Glancing over the post I did for month 8, I feel as though you grew and aged 2 months in just 1 month's time.
Those 3 teeth finally came in and then some. As I write this, I can now see the top of another bottom tooth (its through your gums but not quite "out" yet) completing a row of 4 teeth on the bottom. Grandma Lulu was in town this week and found a top canine while you were laughing on the changing table. I thought I had heard you grinding your teeth last week (which, is a rather sickening sound. Its like nails on a chalk board) and couldn't figure out how you were doing it. I guess now we know. So, that's 5 teeth in all. They're all coming in out of order but as long as they all come in, who cares, right? Way to catch up!
I'm still into your sleep patterns. You sleep in these frantic positions all over the crib but I am getting more used to it. I find you buried under a blanket, shoved in a corner, sleeping cross-wise or laying with your feet up & over the bumper. I really could do without your "face-down" position, though - its unnerving. Lately, you've been restless at night. I think you are on the verge of some other milestone. Its neat to watch you react this way and also sad to see you so frustrated even in your sleep.
You started wetting the bed at night. Actually, you've been leaking during the day, too. I guess this was bound to happen. We've gotten away with cheap diapers for a few months now. Well, I am happy to report we are back to name brand so now you can fill a diaper with 2 gallons of pee again. Where does all this pee come from anyway?
I did buy you a bath seat like I talked about last month. It... kinda sucks. I have to now clean out the tub before you get in. It also takes a heck of a lot more water to make your bath. When we are done bathing, I then have to rinse out the seat and put it somewhere in our small bathroom. I have to do this after it dries out and before I hit the shower the next morning. I know this may not sound all that big of a deal... but... it is. Its really a pain in the ass. I'm finding that I have started bathing you every 3rd night as a result of this nuisance. I'm sorry you've had less frequent baths as a result of my apathy to cleaning the tub. It was bound to happen sooner or later.
You started saying more varied sounds including "da-da!" We think you are actually beginning to know who da-da is and who ma-ma is. You have been known to say "da-da" when he gets you in the morning (you used to call him ma-ma). Maybe this genius is all in our heads, but, I don't think so. You also "blow" a lot. You blow out of your mouth like one would do when they are cooling off hot food. You tend to do this when you are content and playing with a toy rather intently. Fake coughing sounds are also a commonly heard sound. We think you are doing this to get attention and we are try not to react to it. You will get loud if you really want all eyes on you. Once we look, you grin. Its hard not to fall for this game. You're too cute with that big grin on your face.
You babble a lot (you even talk to your toys) and still love "ba-ba-ba" and "ma-ma-ma." Your laugh is still a horsey nerd laugh but you will squeal & giggle when we grab the back of your thigh. I love the squeal.
Dad went to the Post Office to buy you a Tyvek envelope to sustain your paper chewing habit. I am happy to share that this has worked and you LOVED IT. After a few weeks though, you are not falling for it as much and are attracted to the "real deal" paper more then ever.
Crawling. Nope, not yet. But you don't flip-out about being on your stomach anymore. This is a good sign. You wriggle and writhe ALL THE TIME. Its almost impossible to entertain you anymore. You always want to get to something or go somewhere. Thing is, we have no idea where that is! Grandma Lulu put you through a bit of "baby bootcamp" and forced you to crawl until you whined. You'd scoot backwards and just get more angry as we clapped and cheered you to go forward. That must have been frustrating as hell for you. Sorry about that. You'll thank us later when you catch on and understand forward mobility.
You aren't pulling yourself up yet but you will stand as rigid as can be when we try and sit you down. You like to lean on the coffee table till you slide away or slide into the splits (I don't have to hold you at all but I do have to be ready to catch you when you fall. And, you will eventually fall!).
We started giving you Gerber Puffs. At first you thought it was a trick that you were not going to fall for. I spend so much time yanking small things away from your mouth that you just sat there staring at the puff in your fingers. I started a video taping this encounter for posterity till I realized 12 minutes in - you were not going to eat it at all. I stuck one in your mouth and you looked dazed. I don't think you liked them at all. But, after a few days with grandma (she probably force fed you while I was away at work) and you took to picking those things up rapid fire. Now, you seem to like them a lot!
On this same vein, I tried "stage 3" foods with you last night and you threw it all up. So much for chunkier textures.
We left you alone with grandma and grandpa instead of taking you with us to do taxes. I thought for sure you'd freak out. I was wrong! You did great! This allowed dad to get some time away from home during the day and for US to have a DATE one night before grandma went back home. It was very nice. We went to dinner, blew $80, came home, ...the end.
You are learning how to wave. Dad puts you up against the glass door when I get home. He'll hold you around your middle and face you out against the glass. When you see me outside, a huge grin lights up your face and you flail your arms & legs wildly. You bang your palms and wave excitedly until I walk in the door... that's when you stare or giggle. Its the most fantastic homecoming I could have ever imagined. Its like a heroes welcome for dragging myself to a corporate office 5 days a week.
We put you out in the backyard the final week in March. The weather was so nice that you wore just a short-sleeved onesie. I put you on a blanket and watched you "rip! rip! rip!" up all of the fresh green grass that daddy worked so hard to plant this spring. You loved it! It was almost cathartic for you somehow. All that pent up winter frustration... just letting it all go with one simple "pull!" and watching the green blades land in your lap. You really like sitting outside with the trees, the birds and the wind blowing. Who doesn't? I can't wait to get out the baby pool and picnic with you out back this summer. It will be so nice to experience something other than inside.
No new nicknames this month.
Things Evie has to look foward to this month:
• Going to the doctor for her 9 month check-up next week.
• Trying Zweiback toasts and other new textures (moving up a stage in foods!)
• Attending her first kid's birthday party (Happy 1st, Miles!)
• Seeing A and J this weekend.
